In Namche Bazaar, we use lodges with proper beds, clean bathrooms, hot showers, and dining areas that would not look out of place in a boutique mountain hotel. Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek Overview
Most trekking companies will tell you the Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek is just the Everest Base Camp Trek standard route with nicer beds. We disagree. After leading this itinerary more than a dozen times, our team at Everest Trekking Company has found that the real difference between a standard and a luxury EBC trek comes down to three decisions made before you even reach the trailhead: how you get to Lukla, where you sleep in Namche, and how you come home from Gorak Shep. Get those three right and the rest of the trek changes completely.
On this 13-day package, you fly to Lukla by helicopter instead of taking the early morning propeller flight from Kathmandu. You stay at Yeti Mountain Home lodges at Phakding and Namche Bazaar, the best rooms on the lower Khumbu trail, with en-suite bathrooms, heated rooms, and sit-down dinners. And on the final morning, after you watch the sun rise over Everest from Kala Patthar (5,545 m), a helicopter picks you up from Gorak Shep and has you back in your five-star Kathmandu hotel by early afternoon. No three-day walk back down the same trail. No rushed Lukla flight. Just the summit experience and the return, clean and direct.
What Makes This Trek Luxury
The word “luxury” gets used loosely in trekking marketing. We mean it in practical terms. In Kathmandu you stay at the Marriott or a comparable five-star property, with airport pickup by private vehicle and a guided half-day tour of Kathmandu’s heritage sites. Your helicopter from Kathmandu to Lukla carries only your group, giving you a private flight with aerial views of the Himalaya from the Bagmati valley to the Dudh Koshi gorge. At Phakding and Namche Bazaar, Yeti Mountain Home lodges run by Mountain Lodges of Nepal provide the kind of room you would expect at a 4-star mountain resort: private bathroom, electric blanket, hot shower, and a set evening meal prepared fresh each night.
Above Namche, at Deboche and Dingboche, we use the best semi-luxury lodges available at those elevations, with rooms that have attached or semi-private bathrooms and reliable hot water. At Lobuche (4,910 m) and Gorak Shep (5,140 m) there are no luxury lodges, every structure above 4,800 m in the Khumbu is a stone building with basic furniture and shared facilities. We book the best rooms available and we tell you this in advance so there are no surprises. A supplementary oxygen kit, first-aid bag, and pulse oximeter travel with your guide on every day of the trek.
The Route
The trek follows the main Khumbu valley trail used on our standard EBC packages, but at a pace that makes the acclimatization easier. After two nights in Kathmandu and a guided sightseeing day, your helicopter departs early on day three for Lukla airport (2,860 m). The 25-minute flight saves you 50 minutes of driving to the domestic terminal plus the check-in queue, and the views of the hills around Kathmandu and the first foothills of the Himalaya make the flight worthwhile on its own. From Lukla you walk three hours south on a gentle descent to Phakding (2,610 m) for your first night in the Yeti Mountain Home.
Day four is the longest day of the first half: a 5 to 6 hour climb through the Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint at Monjo, across the suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi river, and up the steep final section into Namche Bazaar (3,446 m). Namche is the largest town in the Khumbu, with a Saturday market, several good bakeries, a gear shop, and the best Wi-Fi connection you will find above Kathmandu. You spend two nights here. On the rest day our guide takes you on a hike up to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880 m, the highest-altitude hotel in the world, for your first clear view of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. The hike to the hotel and back to Namche takes four hours and gives your body a first taste of altitude above 3,500 m.
From Namche the trail climbs through the forest above Phunki Thenga and reaches Tengboche (3,870 m) and its famous monastery, which was founded in the early 20th century and is the largest gompa in the Khumbu region. You spend the night at Deboche, a quiet settlement just below the monastery ridge, then walk to Dingboche (4,410 m) the following day through the village of Pangboche. At Dingboche you take a second acclimatization day, hiking up Nangkartshang hill to around 5,030 m for panoramic views of Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the Island Peak massif.
The final approach begins at Lobuche. From there the trail crosses the lateral moraine of the Khumbu glacier past the climbers’ memorial cairns at Thukla and continues to Gorak Shep (5,140 m), the last settlement before base camp. On the morning after you arrive at Gorak Shep, you walk to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and back, roughly 8 hours of walking on rocky glacial terrain with altitude taking its toll on pace. The next morning you are up at 4:30 a.m. for the pre-dawn climb to Kala Patthar (5,545 m). Your guide Susam Suywal, who has made this climb more than 40 times, calls the view from Kala Patthar at sunrise the clearest close-range sight of Everest’s south face available to trekkers anywhere in the world. After photos and a short rest, you descend to Gorak Shep for breakfast and board the helicopter back to Kathmandu.
Best Time to Go
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are the two reliable windows. Our senior trek leader Susam Suywal recommends mid-October to early November as the best single period: the monsoon is finished, the post-storm visibility is excellent, daytime temperatures at Namche sit around 10 to 14°C, and the trail is active but not at its April peak for crowds. April and early May have the most stable morning weather but bring the highest number of commercial expeditions and a busy trail from Dingboche upward.
Winter departures are possible in January and February for trekkers willing to accept temperatures below −20°C at Kala Patthar and an increased chance of helicopter delays from wind. We handle winter luxury EBC trips as private arrangements, contact us for a custom quote.
Permits
The package includes all three required permits: the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit (NPR 3,000), the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit (NPR 2,000), and the TIMS card (NPR 2,000). Your guide manages the documentation at every checkpoint. You carry copies in your day pack but never need to handle payments at the gates.

2026 Update: Lukla Flights and Permit Fees
Trekkers joining Everest Trekking Company in spring 2026 (March to May) should note that Lukla flights during the peak spring season often depart from Ramechhap airport rather than Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. Ramechhap is approximately 3 hours by road from Kathmandu. We arrange shared jeep transfers for all groups departing from Ramechhap. Autumn departures (September to November) typically fly directly from Kathmandu.
Permit fees for 2026 remain: Sagarmatha National Park entry at NPR 3,000 (approximately USD 22) per person, and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee at NPR 3,000 (approximately USD 22) per person. Both are included in your Everest Trekking Company package price. A TIMS card (Trekkers Information Management System) is also included at NPR 2,000 (approximately USD 15).
