The most common question people ask before booking this trip is not about the trek, it is about the helicopter. When does it leave? How long is the flight? What do you see from the air? The short answers: the helicopter departs from Gorak Shep (5,140 m) the morning after you reach Everest Base Camp, the flight to Kathmandu takes roughly 60 to 90 minutes depending on the route and weather, and you see the entire Khumbu, the icefall, the glaciers, the ridgelines you walked for nine days, from above. It is a genuinely different experience from the trek itself, and most people say the descent by helicopter makes the ascent on foot feel more deliberate.
The practical reason to choose this version of the EBC trek over the standard 14-day format is time. Instead of four days of descent retracing ground you already know, you fly back in under two hours. What Makes This Different from the Standard Trek
The route up is identical to the 14-day standard EBC trek, Lukla, Phakding, Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorak Shep, with the same two acclimatisation days built in. The difference is the return. On Day 10, after the Kala Patthar sunrise climb, you descend to Gorak Shep, pack your daypack into the helicopter bag, and fly directly to Kathmandu. No Pheriche, no Namche, no Phakding, no Lukla flight. Total trip duration is 11 days.
Difficulty
The trek up is rated strenuous. Daily walking time runs five to eight hours. The highest point is Kala Patthar at 5,555 m. The helicopter return does not change the physical demands of the ascent, acclimatisation, altitude management, and fitness requirements are identical to the full trek. The helicopter saves time on the return, not effort on the way up.
Best Time
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are the reliable seasons for both trekking and helicopter operations. Helicopter flights are weather-dependent: low cloud or wind at Gorak Shep ground the aircraft, sometimes for a day. We build a one-day weather buffer into the itinerary, and our emergency protocol for extended delays is either a waiting day or an organised walk-out to Lukla with a commercial flight.
Permits Required
Three permits are required and all are included in the package price: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit (NPR 3,000), the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Fee (NPR 3,000), and the TIMS card (NPR 2,000). We handle all paperwork in Kathmandu on Day 1.

2026 Update: Lukla Flights and Permit Fees
Trekkers joining Everest Trekking Company in spring 2026 (March to May) should note that Lukla flights during the peak spring season often depart from Ramechhap airport rather than Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. Ramechhap is approximately 3 hours by road from Kathmandu. We arrange shared jeep transfers for all groups departing from Ramechhap. Autumn departures (September to November) typically fly directly from Kathmandu.
Permit fees for 2026 remain: Sagarmatha National Park entry at NPR 3,000 (approximately USD 22) per person, and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee at NPR 3,000 (approximately USD 22) per person. Both are included in your Everest Trekking Company package price. A TIMS card (Trekkers Information Management System) is also included at NPR 2,000 (approximately USD 15).
